Stephen Sundlof, the director of the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, told the WSJ that melamine was also found in a few samples of nutritional and medical supplements. However, the amount of the detected melamine was so low that it was not a health concern, and contamination likely occured during processing or packaging, the WSJ reported. "There's no basis for concern because we're talking about trace levels that are so low ... that there's absolutely no risk," FDA spokeswoman Judy Leon told Reuters.
Melamine, which is normally used to make hard plastics and fertilizer, is the chemical blamed for sickening tens of thousands of babies in China after they consumed tainted infant formula. Manufacturers are believed to have added the powder to watered-down milk products ecause it mimics high-protein additives. Four Chinese children died from problems caused by drinking the toxic formula. Over a thousand children are still hospitalized for kidney damage.
There have been so many problems with melamine-tainted dairy products from China that earlier this month the FDA said it would require food imports from the country to verify through independent labs that they are free of the chemical before they can be sold in the U.S. market.
